Officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seized cans of unsweetened condensed milk manufactured locally from the shelves of stores throughout the country on Wednesday after the milk product was found to be contaminated with melamine far exceeding acceptable safety standards, according to Deputy Public Health Minister Vicharn Minchainant.
The seizure was made after the FDA was informed by the ministry's Medical Sciences Department that tests found tins of the Mali brand of condensed milk (385 grams) with the expiry date of 16/01/09 to be tainted with unacceptable levels of melamine. The milk product is manufactured by Thai Milk Industries.
According to Vicharn, the specific lot which was tested had 92.82 milligrams per kilogram of melamine, far exceeding the maximum level of 2.5 mg/kg. Mali milkas well as other products using similar raw materials were recalled from stores nationwide, he said.
FDA officials visited the company's factory in Ayutthaya. The company said it imported raw materials from Belgium, Switzerland, Australia, Germany and India.
Vicharn said the company's owner could face a maximum two years in prison, a fine of 20,000 baht (US$583), or both.
The FDA earlier collected samples of 10 products for tests, with six testing negative. Three other test results have yet to be released.
The milk food safety controversy began in China, where four babies died and about 54,000 infants have become ill after drinking milk made from baby formula tainted with melamine.
