Breast reduction surgery (also known as reduction mammoplasty) is the surgery for remove excess skin and tissue from the breasts. Most of the patients undergo the surgery for both breasts, the breast reduction surgery is also used for breasts symmetrical.
The breast reduction surgery will benefit for:
A woman may choose to undergo a breast reduction if her breasts are out of proportion to her body shape, skin infections under the crease of the breast, asymmetrical breasts or breasts that cause pain to the upper body due to their weight. It may also be for psychological reasons. Younger women (usually under 18 years old) will mostly likely need to wait until their breasts are fully developed before having breast reduction surgery.
The breast reduction surgery for male:
Some men who also have large breasts can perform the breast reduction surgery (or gynaecomastia). The surgery can helping to flat the breast area.
The Surgery:
The breast reduction operation will undergo under general anesthesia.The surgeon will make an incision around the areola (the brown area surrounding the nipple), down towards crease underneath the breast and then along the crease itself. The unwanted fatty tissue and skin will be removed and the nipples and areola are placed into their new position. Finally the skin is contoured to the right shape, before incisions are closed. Nipples are remain attached to the nerves and blood vessels during the breast reduction operation. The surgeon may be tubes in the breasts for a short period after the operation to drain any excess fluid.
Risks of the breast reduction surgery:
Some patients may get side effects after the breast reduction surgery such as nausea/vomiting as an effect of the general anesthesia, pain and tenderness, swelling, bruising and numbness. Long-term risks include loss or increase in sensation, excess skin around scars, infection, fluid build-up, asymmetry and blood clotting.
Recovery from breast reduction surgery:
The patient usually be required to stay in hospital overnight after the breast reduction surgery. A supportive bra must be worn for between 1-3 months. If tubes have been left to drain excess fluid, you will be required to have these taken out after a couple of days. You will be advised to take at least two weeks off work, and to avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks. Sutures will be removed 1-2 weeks after the breast reduction surgery. It may take several months for breasts to settle into their new shape.
